Gold prices continue to trade within a relatively narrow range, struggling to build enough momentum to rise above $4,100 an ounce. However, according to Saxo Bank’s Head of Commodity Strategy, Ole Hansen, the current consolidation should not be viewed as a sign of weakness. Instead, it suggests that investors are increasingly focusing on longer-term economic trends rather than reacting to short-term market volatility.
Despite renewed geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, gold has remained remarkably stable. The collapse of peace negotiations between the United States and Iran has led to renewed military exchanges, driving crude oil prices above $80 a barrel.
While rising oil prices have traditionally boosted gold through increased inflation concerns, bullion has not experienced a sustained rally. Nevertheless, it has successfully remained above $4,000 an ounce. Hansen believes this resilience indicates that investors are becoming less inclined to sell gold solely because inflation risks have re-emerged.
He argues that markets are beginning to distinguish between the immediate inflationary effects of higher energy prices and their longer-term impact on economic growth. In the near term, elevated oil prices have increased expectations that the Federal Reserve could maintain a tighter monetary policy, pushing real interest rates higher.
Over time, however, prolonged inflation driven by expensive energy may weaken economic activity, increasing the appeal of gold as a defensive asset. Should concerns about slowing growth begin to outweigh inflation fears, gold could once again attract stronger investment demand.
The precious metal also received support from softer-than-expected U.S. inflation data released this week. Consumer prices declined 0.4% during the month, largely due to lower energy costs, while annual headline inflation eased to 3.5%. Core inflation also shifted to 2.6%, reinforcing expectations that underlying price pressures are gradually cooling.
Although the conflict involving Iran remains a significant source of uncertainty, analysts note that America’s economy continues to demonstrate resilience despite global energy market disruptions. This strength has helped stabilize inflation expectations and reduced pressure on policymakers to tighten monetary policy further.
Hansen maintains that the Federal Reserve is unlikely to raise interest rates this year. Instead, he expects gold to remain in a consolidation phase as investors assess whether persistent inflation or slowing economic growth will become the dominant market theme in the months ahead. For now, Hansen expects gold to continue trading in the range of $3,950 to $4,200 an ounce.
A move above $4,200 would suggest investors are increasingly pricing in the broader economic consequences of a prolonged energy shock, while a drop below $3,950 would indicate that inflation fears, higher bond yields and a stronger U.S. dollar have regained control of market sentiment.
That price range is therefore going to be closely watched by numerous stakeholders in the gold industry, such as Platinum Group Metals Ltd. (NYSE American: PLG) (TSX: PTM), as the weeks and months go by.
