China significantly increased its gold imports in June as lower international bullion prices encouraged investors and financial institutions to expand their purchases. According to the latest customs figures, the East Asian nation imported approximately 173 tons of gold last month, marking the highest monthly total since early 2024 and extending a three-month streak of rising imports.
The increase was largely driven by bargain buying after gold prices retreated from their record highs earlier in the year. A stronger Chinese yuan also made overseas purchases more affordable, encouraging both retail investors and commercial banks to increase their holdings of the precious metal.
Banks took advantage of the favorable pricing environment to replenish inventories and utilize their remaining import quotas before changes to China’s licensing framework took effect in June. Chinese banks, which require import licenses issued under quotas regulated by the People’s Bank of China, also import gold to support growing demand for retail investment products. These include gold accumulation plans, which allow consumers to gradually build holdings through small, regular purchases.
Analysts say banks have been increasing physical bullion reserves to meet demand for these products while maintaining adequate inventories for future spikes in consumer buying.
Last month’s strong performance followed another robust month in May, when imports exceeded 160 tons, the highest monthly level in more than two years at the time. Gold prices during May remained roughly 25% below the record highs recorded earlier this year, encouraging investors to take advantage of lower prices.
By the end of May, China’s cumulative gold imports had reached around 692 tons, representing a substantial increase compared with the same period a year earlier. Market analysts attributed the sustained rise in imports to strong retail demand for gold bars and continued participation in gold accumulation plans.
Earlier gains in April were also supported by a premium in China’s domestic gold market, which made imports more attractive and encouraged higher inflows of bullion.
Looking ahead, analysts expect import demand to remain relatively stable. If gold prices remain below their recent peaks, China is likely to maintain elevated import levels as investors continue buying on price weakness while financial institutions replenish supplies.
Coupled with seasonal jewelry demand, these factors could continue supporting global gold prices in the months ahead. Additionally, sustained import growth reflects investors’ confidence in gold as a long-term store of value, reinforcing the metal’s enduring role in China’s investment landscape despite ongoing market volatility.
Gold industry participants like Platinum Group Metals Ltd. (NYSE American: PLG) (TSX: PTM) will continue studying how the different evolving market dynamics influence bullion prices in the weeks ahead.
