As an abundant element in the universe, hydrogen has an extensive range of applications, among them its use as a carrier of clean energy in fuel cells in cars and in oil refining. With the automotive industry continuously expanding, the demand for alternative fuels like hydrogen has grown exponentially.
Having recognized the opportunity this presents, the state of Michigan launched an initiative focused on exploring clean energy sources like nuclear power and natural gas at the start of this year. In her announcement, Governor Gretchen Whitmer emphasized that the state possessed unique geological features that were uncommon in other parts of the country, giving it a distinct advantage in developing this energy source.
These features include the Michigan bedrock within the Midcontinental Rift, a widely recognized formation in North America. Whitmer also noted that this geological rarity presented an opportunity to invest in an energy option that wasn’t widely accessible elsewhere.
The primary focus of the initiative will be to assess Michigan’s geological hydrogen resources and prioritize green hydrogen production. Geologic hydrogen occurs naturally as a gas within rock formations underground. Unlike produced hydrogen, it doesn’t require the use of fossil fuels or electrolysis for its generation.
Additionally, it is considered low-emission as an energy carrier. This is because its use results in water as the primary by-product, rather than carbon dioxide, which is harmful to the environment.
Michigan’s move reflects a broader shift in its energy strategy as it works to phase out the use of coal in favor of cleaner options, and comes after it passed a major legislation that commits it to achieving 100% clean energy by 2040, setting a clear long-term direction for its energy future. Figures show that in 2024, electricity generation was largely driven by natural gas, with nuclear power trailing behind.
Reports also show that over the last ten years, coal dependence has dropped by 50%, which reinforces the state’s long-term commitment to eliminate carbon emissions.
For the success of this recently launched initiative, various state departments are expected to coordinate their efforts and submit a comprehensive set of technical reports by April 1st. These reports will examine key considerations, including economic benefits, potential environmental effects, and the infrastructure needed to support geologic hydrogen development.
Overall, the development of geologic hydrogen presents major economic potential for Michigan, including investment attraction, job creation, and industrial growth. With rising demand for affordable, low-carbon energy, geologic hydrogen offers a faster path to net-zero emissions, positioning the state to emerge as a future hydrogen hub.
Enterprises like MAX Power Mining Corp. (CSE: MAXX) (OTC: MAXXF) operating in Canada are also focused on advancing geologic hydrogen as a viable fuel alternative to meet the growing push to phase out dirty fuels around the world.
