UK Crime Drama to Be Filmed in Former Mining Villages

A new crime drama that’s inspired by Nottingham’s former mining communities will soon be aired on UK screens. Sherwood, a six-part series written by James Graham, is based off of a 2004 manhunt for two killers in North Nottinghamshire. The series’ producers noted that the action portrayed in the drama will be fictional.

Sherwood’s writer, who also wrote “Brexit: The Uncivil War,” grew up in Sutton-in-Ashfield. Graham stated that he hoped to represent his community’s voices through the series, explaining that these ex-mining communities in North Nottinghamshire did not receive a lot of attention. He then stated that he felt honored to be telling a fictional story about a real trauma with the resilience, heart and humor of the individuals who he loved and knew there.

“Sherwood,” as the drama is called, follows two officers of the law — one from the Met Police and another from the local force — as they try to get to the bottom of two unexpected and shocking murders.

The series is inspired by real events around the murder of Keith Frogson, a former miner, which led to an extensive manhunt for Robert Boyer in North Nottinghamshire’s woods. Concurrently, Terry Rodgers, a man from a neighboring village, murdered his daughter Chanel Taylor and fled into the woods as well.

After being captured, Boyer was held in a hospital indefinitely; Terry Rodgers died while on a hunger strike prior to going on trial for killing his daughter.

The drama series will examine how the appearance of more officers of the law from outside the county and the similar incidents renewed old suspicions and rivalries left in the community following the Miners’ Strike of 1984. Graham explained that the filmmakers wanted to examine the subject of social divisions, some of which have lasted to this day.

Graham, who was living in the area at the time of the events, mentioned that he had worked with the police as well as the communities and families involved. He added that he had chosen to fictionalize the occurrences rather than tell the exact story as it would help safeguard the families from further distress.

Graham will be working with House Productions to produce “Sherwood.” This is the same production company he had teamed up with to produce “Brexit: The Uncivil War,” which earned him a BAFTA and Emmy nominations.

The filming of “Sherwood” is scheduled to begin later this year in Nottinghamshire with Graham expecting its release in 2022.
