Last week, a six-hour blockade at the Ministro Hales mine in Chile heightened concerns over potential supply disruptions as labor disputes continue to threaten production across major mining operations. Workers and union representatives blocked the primary entrances to the mine which is owned by Codelco, halting production activities and movements of vehicles.
The protest centered on unpaid bonuses linked to a severe accident at the workplace that occurred towards the end of last year. The incident involved a haul truck that was engulfed in flames, leaving one of the workers with severe burns.
According to union representatives, thirteen trucks and related equipment were temporarily taken out of service, disrupting operations and affecting workers’ bonus payments. Employees argue that they should not bear the financial consequences of safety failures they believe are management’s responsibility.
The Federation of Copper Workers’ legislative director, Alberto Muñoz, stated in a recent interview with Cooperativa radio that workers’ safety concerns remained unresolved alongside the bonus dispute.
He explained the occupation began at 6 in the morning and warned that demonstrations could extend to the Gabriela Mistral, Radomiro Tomic, and Chuquicamata mines, if management failed to address their grievances.
The disruption comes amid growing concerns about the reliability of Chile’s copper supply, particularly as demand increases from electricity infrastructure, data centers and electric cars. Copper is an industrial metal valued for its ductility, high electrical and thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance, and malleability.
A recent study determined that geological challenges, labor conflicts, accidents and extreme weather place roughly 5% of production at the largest copper mines in Chile at risk. Its assessment covered fourteen copper operations, with the Escondida, Los Pelambres and El Teniente mines recording risks of 7.5%, 8% and 9% respectively.
The findings highlight how unexpected operational setbacks can undermine production forecasts and complicate efforts to maintain stable copper supplies.
Pressure on the market is also emerging in Canada, where over 1,000 workers at the Highland Valley Copper mine went on strike the previous weekend. The country’s biggest open-pit copper mine has continued operating at reduced capacity, adding to concerns about potential supply constraints.
The labor dispute comes as Teck and Anglo American advance their proposed merger, a deal expected to make the resulting enterprise a major copper producer globally.
With tensions mounting at mining operations in both Chile and Canada, further industrial action could deepen uncertainty over global copper production at a time when the metal is increasingly important to the energy transition and expanding digital infrastructure.
Supply concerns like these make it all the more urgent for projects being developed by companies like Numa Numa Resources Inc. to quickly come online so that sources of the metal can be further diversified and supplies bolstered.
