Pioneer Research Shows That Bacteria May Be Used To Extract Minerals in Space

Pioneer mining experiments performed by astronauts in space have shown that in zero gravity microbes can effectively extract elements from rocks. The astronauts on the International Space Station performed these tests. This opens up an array of possibilities for humanity in terms of exploration and settlement of the solar system. The study, which was published in the “Nature Communications” journal, explains that microorganisms play important roles in natural process such as the cycling elements in the atmosphere and weathering rocks into soils on earth. They are also used in various manufacturing and industrial processes, such as bio mining. Bio mining…

Opportunities for the Mining Sector in 2021

The onset of the coronavirus pandemic disrupted a lot of major industries, among them the mining industry. The production of metals declined, with many mining operations halting due to restrictions that were implemented as a result of the pandemic. Despite this, though, the sector is slowly regaining its footing as mines in various countries were declared essential industries. It’s clear, however, that as we move into next year, the coronavirus will continue affecting all industries, with many having to incur additional expenses to continue operating under the new normal. To ensure the sector remains operational during this period while also…

Phytomining and the Plants That ‘Bleed’ Nickel

In the heart of Sulawesi, an Indonesian island, is a small mining town by the name of Sorowako. The town is one of the biggest areas for mining nickel in the world, with one firm extracting 5% of the world’s supply of nickel from this one location. Since 2004, Aiyen Tjoa, a lecturer and soil biologist, has been on a mission to locate rare plants that can absorb nickel from nickel-rich surroundings. The plants have the potential to absorb high amounts of the mineral from the soil and store it in high quantities. The plants could also offer an alternative…

Why Mining Gold is a Lot Harder Now

For decades, many have talked about establishing a mine in Northern Ireland’s Curraghinalt townland. However, this has never been realized. Lack of progress on a mine in the area may be attributed to a group of locals from County Tyrone who have been protesting the establishment of a mine for more than three years. A mining company recently applied to extract gold from the mine, but the application has yet to be approved. If approved, the mine could create new employment opportunities and bring money to the county. Despite that, many from the area would prefer the application not be…

Mining Firms Step Up Automation as Pandemic Drags On

A new study shows that roughly 20% of individuals who are currently working in the natural resources sector, i.e. metals and mining industries, are at risk of being replaced by automatons. This comes at a time when most firms are moving toward automated machinery, with many adopting automation as a way to work around the ongoing coronavirus-related restrictions. According to the latest “Future of Jobs” report by the World Economic Forum, 79% of mining firms are speeding up the adoption of tools such as video conferencing and the digitization of work processes. Of this 79%, more than 26% of the…

Motorola Unveils Next-Gen Radio for the Mining Sector

With the ever-growing data that needs to be managed, the increasing demand to do more with limited resources and the current global pandemic, the natural resources sector has a lot to deal with. Siloed devices and systems that don’t communicate with each other only add more to the demand. Frontline workers require crucial technology to manage their everyday tasks effectively. These tools have to be flexible enough to help them connect with a wider ecosystem of technologies, without any hitches. To help with this, Motorola Solutions will launch its next-generation TETRA device, a terrestrial trunked radio.  The device, MXP600, will meet…
