IEA Predicts 2030 Peak for Coal, Oil, Gas Energy

The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that global demand for coal, natural gas and oil will peak by 2030 amid an “unstoppable” energy transition. According to the agency, carbon pollution from the three fossil fuels will also peak by the end of the decade, thanks to the proliferation of renewable energy. The IEA report predicted that there would be close to 10 times more electric cars than there are now by the end of 2030. Renewable energy sources such as wind and solar will also account for nearly one-half of the worldwide energy mix compared to 30% in 2023. Most…

Swedish Scientists Find Promising Way to Recover Minerals from Discarded EV Batteries

Electric vehicle battery metals are poised to see a major increase in demand over the next couple of decades, thanks to soaring EV adoption. Minerals such as lithium, graphite and cobalt are critical to the development of EV batteries, but their production is almost completely reliant on Chinese companies, something that has left Western pundits and lawmakers extremely worried. Furthermore, the lack of efficient battery recycling techniques makes it incredibly difficult to reuse EV battery minerals and places even more pressure on the world’s already strained supply. According to a team of Swedish researchers, they may have developed a technique…

IMARC 2023: Australia Poised to Take Global Lead in Critical Minerals

The announcement by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to double the investment in the Critical Minerals Fund sets the scene for this year’s International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC) in Sydney next week. The AU$4 billion plan is aimed at expanding the production and processing of critical minerals in Australia to secure the country’s position as a global critical minerals powerhouse. Mr Albanese said Australia is in a strong position to help the global shift to net-zero due to its large deposits of critical minerals. “Australia is committed to building sustainable and secure critical minerals supply chains with the United States. This is central to…

IMARC 2023: Providing an in-depth glance into the opportunities of Mongolia’s mining sector

Rich in natural resources, Mongolia has historically attracted significant foreign investment to its mining sector. Producing primarily coal, copper and gold, the mining industry is a crucial aspect of Mongolia’s economy and a significant contributor to its economic growth. With this growth, however, has come a heavy reliance on the mining sector and a range of environmental, social and economic challenges that the country has never had to grapple with. The International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC), to be held in Sydney from 31 October – 2 November, will see talks from Mongolia’s largest mining companies and associations on the…

China Curbs Graphite Exports, a Move That Could Hamper EV Industry

Last week, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced that it would cut graphite exports in a move that has the potential to cripple the global electric vehicle industry. With tensions between China and the United States and its allies rising in recent years, nations such as the U.S. are keen on cutting their reliance on China to limit the Asian country’s leverage in the nascent electric vehicle industry. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are powered by lithium-ion batteries and produce zero emissions at the tailpipe, making them a perfect replacement for the internal combustion engine (ICE) cars that currently rule the…
