Data Shows China Continuing Gold Buying Trend

After a year or so of relatively lackluster performance, the gold market surged in 2022 as several countries significantly increased their gold purchases as part of efforts to build up their reserves. By the time 2022 drew to a close, central banks around the world had purchased a whopping 1,136 tons of gold, pumping around $70 billion into the market. China’s central bank was among the largest buyers of gold through 2022 and into 2023, buying nearly one-half of the global gold purchases in 2022 (522 tons) and 244 tons in January and February. Beijing has increased its gold purchases…

Dropping Prices of Natural Gas Cause European Countries to Switch Energy Sources

More than a year after Russia cut natural gas supplies to the rest of Europe and significantly exacerbated an ongoing energy crisis, it seems the region is seeing a drop in natural gas prices. A recent analysis by S&P Global Commodity Insights reveals that a drop in natural gas prices has contributed to fuel switching among major European economies. The analysis also stated there was little likelihood of coal-fired energy generation declining even further. Natural gas prices have performed poorly in recent weeks, and this seems to have changed the dynamic of the market, specifically by pushing more energy producers…

Current Short-Term Challenges Present Investors with Massive Copper Investment Opportunities

For the past few months, mining experts have warned that there isn’t enough copper to sustain global industrial needs. Higher demand coupled with constrained supply from South America has exacerbated an ongoing copper shortage that experts predict could last for the rest of the decade. Slower projections of growth in China, which is the global leading importer of copper ore, coupled with higher interest rates, and a banking crisis in the United States have also dampened copper’s outlook for the year. Since copper plays a critical role in industrial machinery and electrical equipment, products largely responsible for keeping our economies…

Mining Executive Says Addressing Cognitive Biases Could Boost Gold Mining Investment

A surge in gold prices is pulling investors back into the gold market after months of relatively lackluster prices. The precious metal has been on a roll in recent months, increasing by close to 20% over several months to trade at more than $2,000 an ounce. As the U.S. Federal Reserve consistently raised benchmark interest rates to help abate inflation, more investors ditched their gold for assets that would allow them to take advantage of increasing interest rates. Gold prices were also impacted by an increasingly valuable greenback and reduced demand in China, which has ramped up gold purchases in…

Major European economies such as France, Germany and the United Kingdom as well as several other countries in the region are looking…

How a Copper Shortage Could Hamstring the Energy Transition

The world is currently facing a critical copper shortage that triggered increased copper prices at the start of the year. Several factors, including the coronavirus crippling supply chains, increased demand for copper and a decline in copper ore quality, contributed to a global shortage that could last until 2030. Some experts fear that these shortages could also threaten the transition to clean energy. Dozens of countries have pledged to transition from dirty fossil fuels, such as oil and coal that have significantly contributed to global warming and climate change, to clean sources of energy. Copper, which already has numerous applications…
