Report Shows Phasing Out Coal Happening Too Slowly to Avert Climate Crisis

A recent report has found that if we are to meet the objectives set out the 2016 Paris agreement, we need to shut down coal-fired plants globally at a faster rate while also halting the construction of new plants. The report, compiled by the Global Energy Monitor, stated that all coal power plants would need to be closed by 2040 with no new ones being built for the goals stipulated in the agreement to be achieved. Global Energy Monitor is a nongovernmental organization that studies the evolving global energy landscape, creating reports, databases and interactive tools. Developed economies will also…

Latest Data Shows Drop in Fertilizer Prices

Last week, it was reported that the average retail prices for fertilizer had dropped from their end-of-March prices. Despite the prices being lower, only the anhydrous fertilizer was significantly less expensive. Anhydrous ammonia (NH3) is a widely used and efficient source of nitrogen fertilizer. It is readily available to producers because it is relatively easy to apply. It should be noted, however, that if not handled properly, this fertilizer can be dangerous. Data shows that the nitrogen fertilizer was 5% lower in comparison to March’s figures, going for $1,026 per ton. The prices of other fertilizers, including DAP, MAP, urea,…

Biden Hopes to Leverage Renewables to Revive Coal Communities

It is clear that the world needs to turn away from fossil fuels such as coal and oil as a primary means of energy generation. Fossil fuels have contributed to the majority of greenhouse gas emissions, and their use poses a significant threat to personal and public health. However, moving away from coal, the dirtiest fossil fuel, will undoubtedly have a negative impact on communities that rely on coal mining and other coal-related activities as a source of income. This has been one of the primary arguments for opponents of the green-energy transition: the green-energy transition could potentially rob thousands…

Zinc Production to Recover in 2023 Though Scheduled Mine Closures Could Dampen Results

The production of zinc around the globe is expected to experience volatility throughout the year as geopolitical factors impact the supply chain. In April 2020, the coronavirus pandemic caused the demand for zinc to decline significantly, as zinc-intensive sectors such as transportation and construction significantly slowed or shut down entirely. Zinc prices fell that month, with worries of a supply surplus and risk-off sentiment also reducing investor interest in the metal greatly. However, the supply surplus turned into a supply shortfall of 1 million tons in 2021 as demand began to increase. This recovery proved to be short lived as…

Melting Glaciers Expose Fossil Fuels, Precious Metals, Possibly Microbes

Around 10% of the world’s land, or 5.8 million square miles, is covered in glacial ice. Most of these glaciers were formed in the last ice age, with the largest ones forming in Antarctica, followed by Alaska. However, years of unprecedented global warming have caused glaciers to start melting at a faster-than-usual rate. Experts estimate that if global warming continues at current rates, the world will lose a whopping 68% of its ice glaciers by the year 2100. In the meantime, melting glaciers are uncovering terrain hidden for thousands of years, revealing ancient artifacts, mineral deposits and even potentially dangerous…

A recent report from environmental policy group iFOREST indicated that India will need $900 billion to wean itself off coal. Two New Yorkers Found with 61 Gold Bars at Brazilian Airport Show Complexity of Illegal Gold Trade

An American duo was recently caught trying to smuggle dozens of gold bars out of a city on the edge of the Amazonian rainforest. Brazilian authorities have stepped up efforts to curtail Illegal gold mining in the Amazon because the illegal mining activities have increasingly caused humanitarian disasters. In addition, experts estimate that illegal gold from the Amazon equals one-half of Brazil’s total…
