Fuel Cell Buses and Trucks Drive Growing Demand for Green Hydrogen

While battery-electric vehicles continue to improve, hydrogen fuel cell technology continues to gain support in heavy-duty transportation. Buses and trucks that require long driving ranges, quick refueling, and reliable operation are creating new demand for green hydrogen, particularly where battery-powered alternatives remain less practical.

Beyond transportation, hydrogen plays an essential role in industries such as steel production, fertilizer manufacturing, chemical processing, and oil refining.

Replacing conventional hydrogen made from fossil fuels with cleaner alternatives is becoming a major priority. Water electrolysis powered by renewable energy remains the leading method of producing green hydrogen, with ongoing improvements helping lower production costs and expand commercial use.

Researchers are also exploring alternative production methods. Biomass-based hydrogen has attracted interest because it can utilize agricultural residues, forestry waste, food waste, wastewater, and animal byproducts.

A study by researchers from Ewha Womans University and Columbia University highlighted brown seaweed as a promising feedstock. Seaweed grows rapidly, absorbs carbon efficiently, requires no farmland or fertilizer, and can be harvested several times each year.

Using a specialized alkaline thermal treatment, the researchers demonstrated that seaweed can produce more hydrogen than some conventional biomass conversion processes, with the potential for carbon-neutral or even carbon-negative production.

Plastic waste is another emerging feedstock. Researchers from Korean universities, in collaboration with the University of California, reported that alkaline thermal treatment can convert discarded plastics into high-purity hydrogen while reducing landfill waste and avoiding harmful emissions associated with incineration.

Although plastic-derived hydrogen supports waste management more than renewable energy generation, it offers an additional pathway to cleaner hydrogen production.

The strongest near-term growth for green hydrogen is expected in commercial transport. In Spain, Bosch has developed fuel cell systems for Irizar buses capable of traveling over 1,000 kilometers before refueling in about 15 minutes.

In Germany, MAN is testing fuel cell-electric trucks with ranges of 450-500 kilometers, while recognizing hydrogen as a complementary solution for long-distance freight and regions lacking sufficient charging infrastructure.

Ballard, another firm in Germany, has developed fuel cell technology that currently powers the majority of its hydrogen bus fleet.

In the United States, investment in hydrogen refueling infrastructure is supporting wider adoption of fuel cell buses. California is developing large-scale hydrogen stations capable of serving expanding public transit fleets, while new commercial truck refueling facilities are also entering operation.

As these projects grow, fuel cell buses and trucks are expected to play an important role in increasing demand for green hydrogen, particularly in heavy-duty transport where fast refueling and extended driving range remain critical advantages.
