Platinum Tops $1,800 as Spot Prices Climb

Platinum prices have exceeded $1,800 per ounce since this month began, marking their highest levels since late 2011 and reviving interest in a metal that spent years underperforming gold. The rally has also prompted Bank of America to revise its outlook, reflecting the strength of a market increasingly shaped by industrial demand and limited supply.

The bank initially increased this year’s average platinum prediction to $2,450 per ounce, before raising its Q4 projection up to $3,000 as prices continued to outperform expectations.

It also revised its palladium prediction upwards to $1,725 per ounce, although analysts anticipate platinum will maintain its advantage because of its more persistent supply deficit. A key driver is the tightening physical market. The World Platinum Investment Council expects inventories to decline to approximately 1.7 million ounces before this year ends, equivalent to under 3 months of worldwide consumption.

This leaves little room to absorb unexpected demand increases or supply disruptions. Production is particularly difficult to expand quickly because platinum is largely mined alongside other metals, especially in South Africa.

China has emerged as another major influence, accounting for over 30% of worldwide platinum demand.

Beyond jewelry and automotive applications, consumption is increasingly supported by industrial technologies, including hydrogen fuel cells and other green-energy applications. Rising purchases from new-energy industries, combined with limited physical availability, have strengthened platinum prices in China’s futures market.

Automotive demand remains significant despite the growing adoption of electric vehicles. More stringent emissions standards are providing additional support to platinum group metals in catalytic converters, particularly in conventional and hybrid vehicles.

Meanwhile, investors seeking alternatives to gold and silver have renewed their interest in platinum, adding another source of demand.

The broader rally has extended across platinum group metals. Rhodium and ruthenium have recorded substantial annual gains, reflecting their concentrated industrial applications and relatively limited market liquidity.

However, further gains are not guaranteed. Platinum could face renewed pressure if investment demand weakens or Chinese jewelry consumption remains subdued. Increased recycling and changes in industrial demand could also ease supply constraints. Nevertheless, platinum’s return to prices last seen more than a decade ago highlights a significant shift in market sentiment.

With constrained production, declining inventories and expanding industrial applications, the metal is increasingly benefiting from both its traditional investment appeal and its growing strategic importance.

Whether prices can sustain their momentum will depend on how effectively supply responds to demand, but the current rally suggests platinum may be emerging from years of relative underperformance into a more prominent position among global commodities.

All the same, mine developers like Platinum Group Metals Ltd. (NYSE American: PLG) (TSX: PTM) are likely to wait some more before committing to new production given the volatility that has been seen in the market over the past several years.
