Major Battery Energy Storage Project to Be Launched in San Diego

A major energy storage project is set to launch battery storage systems across San Diego, California, which will add more emissions-free energy to the state’s electric grid. The systems will be designed, constructed and operated by EnerSmart Storage, a renewable energy company based in the county.

The company has a portfolio of more than 40 battery storage systems that will make up 160 megawatts and about 330 megawatt-hours of battery storage electricity. This amount is enough to power more than 100,000 homes for a couple of hours. The company plans to construct 12 sites in total by the project’s completion, which will increase energy efficiency and improve grid reliability. EnerSmart Storage managing partner James Beach stated that the portfolio would boost the growth of renewable energy and help the San Diego Gas & Electric distribution system by providing businesses and local residents with backup power.

The company plans to break ground in two locations: one in El Cajon and another in Chula Vista. The Chula Vista location is one of 10 sites that will use lithium-iron phosphate batteries manufactured by a multinational firm known as BYD. BYD manufactures batteries, which are considered to be less flammable in comparison to the Li-ion batteries, are often used in utility-scale battery storage systems and electric cars.

Siemens Financial Services and the North American Development Bank are funding EnerSmart’s projects with BYD. Beach revealed that the total amount injected into the projects was between $90 and $100 million, adding that the company was thrilled to have strong financial institutions backing the projects.

On the other hand, the El Cajon site is one of the pair of locations that will make use of zinc battery storage technology made by EOS Energy. The North American Development Bank estimates that these energy storage projects will displace the emissions of about 31,000 metric tons of carbon annually.

In a statement, CEO of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce Jerry Sanders stated that the new battery storage project helped the county meet its infrastructure requirements and contributed to its transition to a green economy.

The Chula Vista and El Cajon locations are scheduled to commence commercial operations on April 1, 2022. EnerSmart hopes that by the end of 2023, all 12 sites will be in operation. The sites, which will have the largest systems once the project is complete, will be Rancho Peñasquitos, storing 60 megawatt-hours of electricity, and Ramona, storing 78 megawatt-hours of electricity. As more battery storage chemistries such as the redox flow batteries commercialized by StorEn Technologies Inc. get online, the green energy storage challenge will gradually melt away.
