Supply Squeeze, Deadly Storms Push Copper Prices Higher

Copper prices continue to climb as severe winter storms in Chile disrupt mining operations, adding pressure to an already tight global market. Chile, which produces more than one-fifth of the world’s copper, has been hit by heavy snowfall, flooding, and strong winds that have interrupted production at several major mines.

The extreme weather has also resulted in fatalities and damaged critical infrastructure, raising concerns about the stability of global copper supplies. Mining companies including Anglo AmericanAntofagastaLundin MiningBarrick, and state-owned Codelco have reported operational disruptions.

Antofagasta temporarily suspended mining and processing activities at its Los Pelambres mine, while Lundin Mining expects its Caserones operation to remain offline for up to three weeks after power lines were damaged by snowstorms.

Although some mines have resumed production or continued operating using existing ore stockpiles, prolonged disruptions could tighten supplies further. The weather-related setbacks come at a time when the copper market is already experiencing significant supply constraints.

Copper prices reached a record high of about $13,643 per metric ton in June, driven by growing concerns over limited supply and strong global demand. The metal remains essential for manufacturing electric vehicles, smartphones, renewable energy infrastructure, power grids, and artificial intelligence (AI) data centers, making it one of the world’s most strategically important industrial commodities.

Market analysts believe the current disruptions alone may not drastically alter supply, but they reinforce broader challenges facing the industry. Global inventories remain relatively low, while uncertainty surrounding potential U.S. tariffs on copper imports and China’s reduced availability of scrap copper have intensified supply concerns.

Analysts also note that Chile has lowered its production outlook for the year, signaling another decline in output that could further tighten the market.

Despite the temporary nature of the storm-related interruptions, any additional setbacks could force buyers to compete for increasingly scarce supplies, placing further upward pressure on prices. Industry experts point out that visible inventories on major exchanges remain below historical averages, reflecting genuine physical shortages rather than speculative concerns alone.

Copper producers remain optimistic about the metal’s long-term outlook. Anglo American, for example, has reaffirmed its strategy of focusing on copper, citing robust demand driven by the global energy transition and expanding AI infrastructure.

While Chinese demand is expected to moderate in the coming months, analysts believe the greatest uncertainty remains the U.S. government’s decision on potential Section 232 tariffs. If supply disruptions persist and policy uncertainty continues, copper prices could surpass previous record highs before the end of the year.

Mineral exploration companies like Collective Mining Ltd. (NYSE American: CNL) (TSX: CNL) will be monitoring how copper prices trend in the coming months since the metal’s price could also impact investor interest in companies linked to copper production.
