The Venezuelan government, in collaboration with opposition leaders, has reached an agreement to work together to secure the return of roughly 31 tons of the country’s gold reserves currently held by the Bank of England.
The proposed move comes as the South American country seeks financial resources for reconstruction after a series of devastating earthquakes earlier this year.
According to recent reports, the bullion is valued at approximately $4.4 billion, based on current market prices. The agreement represents a rare example of cooperation between the country’s deeply divided political factions. The two sides reportedly intend to jointly pursue the release of the reserves following U.S.-backed negotiations held earlier this month.
At the same time, officials are expected to establish strict safeguards governing the use of any money recovered from the gold. Opposition representatives have emphasized that the funds should be directed toward rebuilding damaged communities and restoring essential infrastructure rather than being diverted for political purposes.
The gold has been held in London since 2018, when a political dispute over control of the country’s central bank intensified.
At the time, the United Kingdom recognized opposition leader Juan Guaidó as Venezuela’s interim president instead of Nicolás Maduro. That decision created competing claims over which central bank authorities had the legal right to manage the nation’s reserves.
British courts subsequently became involved in the dispute, resulting in years of legal proceedings and leaving the bullion effectively inaccessible.
The latest effort to recover the reserves also follows an appeal by Acting President Delcy Rodríguez to King Charles. Rodríguez reportedly asked the monarch to support the release of the Venezuelan gold.
Opposition figures, meanwhile, have maintained that any agreement allowing the bullion to be transferred should include clear oversight, transparency and accountability provisions. The urgency surrounding the issue has increased following the June earthquakes, which reportedly caused widespread destruction across the South American country.
Over 6,000 people lost their lives, with hospitals, homes, roads and other critical infrastructure being damaged. The disaster has also added to the country’s economic difficulties.
Venezuela’s central bank reported that disruptions to the distribution of goods contributed to a significant increase in inflation last month.
Despite the political agreement to pursue the bullion’s return, the process is unlikely to be straightforward. The central issue remains the legal dispute over who has authority over Venezuela’s central bank reserves.
After almost eight years of litigation and competing claims of political legitimacy, transferring the gold will require the parties to overcome significant legal and procedural obstacles.
If successful, however, the recovery of the $4.4 billion reserve could provide a substantial source of funding for Venezuela’s earthquake reconstruction efforts.
