Silver’s Supply Deficit is Poised to Widen on Global Markets in 2026

The global silver market is expected to record another supply deficit this year, as demand continues to outpace available supply. According to the World Silver Survey, this metal’s market could face a shortfall of more than 46 million ounces, quite an increase from the 40.3 million ounces recorded last year.

Global mine production is expected to remain broadly flat, while total silver supply could decline by approximately 2%.

The persistent imbalance highlights the challenges facing the mining industry, where discovering deposits, securing permits and developing new mines can take years before production begins.

Silver’s expanding industrial applications are an important factor supporting demand, given the metal’s use in solar panels because of its excellent electrical conductivity, which makes it essential to photovoltaic technology. Growing investment in renewable energy, electric vehicles, electronics and electrical infrastructure is also supporting its role in modern manufacturing.

Silver is further used in medical products, jewelry, silverware and investment bars and coins, creating demand across several sectors. However, increasing consumption presents challenges for producers, as new mining projects may not come online quickly enough to close the supply gap.

Silver traded at approximately $60 per ounce on October 7, compared with approximately $66 a month earlier, which illustrates recent price fluctuations amid changing market conditions.

With supply growth constrained, investors are paying closer attention to exploration companies seeking new deposits and producers working to bring additional ounces into production.

North American silver-lead-zinc districts are attracting renewed interest, particularly areas where historical drilling can be reassessed using modern exploration techniques. GoldHaven Resources has set up a drill rig on its district-scale Magno project in British Columbia. The program is targeting high-grade silver, zinc and lead mineralization as the company investigates the property’s potential.

Established producers are also contributing to North America’s silver sector. Hecla Mining recorded 4.2 million ounces in Q2 while First Majestic Silver reported production of 3.4 million ounces. Endeavour Silver Corporation also produced a little over 2 million ounces.

Meanwhile, Americas Gold and Silver Corporation announced a discovery grading 1,062 grams per ton of silver in Idaho’s Silver Valley.

Although these developments could support future supply, exploration success does not translate immediately into production. Projects must progress through resource definition, feasibility studies, permitting and construction before commercial mining can begin.

With demand supported by industrial applications and mine output struggling to expand, the silver market’s supply deficit remains a significant concern. Exploration and mine development by entities like New Pacific Metals Corp. (NYSE American: NEWP) (TSX: NUAG) will therefore play an important role in determining whether future production can narrow the widening gap between supply and demand.
