While the price of gold continues to exceed $4,100 per ounce, persistent inflation, a strengthening U.S. dollar and rising bond yields could limit further gains. Although the precious metal has recovered from the decline it suffered as last week ended, analysts believe its price must go above $4,200 to establish a stronger bullish trend.
Spot gold was trading at around $4,187 per ounce, representing an increase of over 1%. Prices rebounded after dropping lower than $4,100 in the previous week, suggesting that investors remain willing to buy during market pullbacks despite growing economic uncertainty.
FOREX.com market analyst Fawad Razaqzada argues that gold may be approaching a price floor. He explains that continued inflows into gold-backed exchange-traded funds demonstrate sustained investor interest, particularly as concerns about rising oil prices and persistent inflation support demand for gold as a hedge.
However, the outlook remains uncertain ahead of this week’s U.S. inflation reports. FXTM’s senior market analyst Lukman Otunuga explained that unexpectedly strong inflation figures could strengthen expectations of tighter Federal Reserve policy, creating additional pressure on gold.
While an immediate increase in rates of interest appears unlikely, markets are still considering the possibility of a hike by the end of this year.
Otunuga identified $4,200 as a critical technical level, noting that a failure to reclaim this threshold could expose gold to further declines under $4,100 and potentially $4,000. Despite these near-term risks, Saxo Bank’s head of commodity strategy Ole Hansen expects gold to remain within the $4,100-$4,200 range for most of this week.
He considers the recent recovery encouraging and maintains a positive medium-term outlook, arguing that either a slowdown in economic growth or mounting pressure from government debt could eventually support gold.
Weaker economic activity may push real yields lower and encourage monetary easing, while rising government borrowing costs could undermine confidence in public finances and increase demand for gold.
The U.S. dollar presents another challenge. Recent gains in the greenback have made dollar-priced commodities more expensive for international buyers. LPL Financial’s Chief cross-asset strategist, Adam Turnquist, explains that the dollar’s improving momentum could continue to weigh on gold if it strengthens further.
Investors will therefore focus on U.S. consumer and producer inflation data, alongside manufacturing indicators and comments from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh. For now, gold’s ability to remain above $4,100 offers some encouragement.
However, persistent inflation and elevated yields could restrict its recovery, leaving the $4,200 level crucial in determining its next move. Analysts and companies like Platinum Group Metals Ltd. (NYSE American: PLG) (TSX: PTM) will be tracking how bullion’s price moves as the economic reports are released this week in the U.S.
