2032 Forecast: Copper Demand Could Reach 34 Million Tons

The global demand for copper is projected to rise to over 34 million tons by 2032, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.68%. This is according to a report by international market intelligence firm, Mordor Intelligence. The anticipated expansion reflects the red metal’s growing importance across industrial manufacturing, renewable energy, electricity networks, electric vehicles, and urban infrastructure.

Copper remains a critical industrial metal because of its excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, durability, and versatility. It is widely used in construction, power generation, transmission systems, electronics, and manufacturing.

As economies increasingly pursue electrification and digitalization, copper is becoming essential to supporting technological advancement, industrial development, and energy security. The expansion of renewable energy and electricity grids is expected to remain a major driver of consumption.

Solar and wind installations require copper for electrical components, while grid modernization and expansion involve extensive upgrades to transmission lines, substations, and distribution networks. Growing electricity demand and infrastructure development, particularly in emerging economies such as India, are expected to further strengthen consumption.

Electric vehicle adoption is another significant contributor to market growth, as these vehicles generally require more copper than conventional cars because of their electric motors, wiring systems, batteries, and charging infrastructure. Increasing vehicle production and investment in charging networks are therefore expected to support long-term demand across the automotive industry.

Despite the positive outlook, the copper market faces several challenges. Tariff uncertainty, fluctuations in prices, mining disruptions, and changing investor activity are creating cost pressures for manufacturers and consumers.

Environmental regulations and lengthy permitting processes can also delay mining and infrastructure projects, affecting development schedules and increasing investment requirements. Recycling is expected to provide an additional source of supply and help reduce pressure on primary production. However, expanding mining and refining capacity will depend on adequate financing, investment, and regulatory approvals.

Globally, the Asia-Pacific is the leading regional market, supported by significant consumption of refined copper in China, industrial activity, and investment in infrastructure. Australia also contributes through established mining and refining operations while North America continues to face supply security concerns due to reliance on imported refined copper, with weaker demand expectations further constraining growth in Europe.

In South America, wire and cable manufacturing in Brazil supports copper consumption, although lower sales to manufacturers in Chile indicate weaker demand in some markets.

Overall, industrial expansion, electrification, renewable energy investment, and infrastructure development are expected to sustain copper demand through 2032. However, the industry’s ability to meet growing consumption will depend on overcoming supply constraints and accelerating investment in new production capacity.

As exploration and mine development companies like Collective Mining Ltd. (NYSE American: CNL) (TSX: CNL) advance their projects, future supply could be boosted to address the growing demand for copper.
